Location - Angkor Muscle gym is located around a 5-10minute walk from Pub Street (around 15-20 minutes walk from Chilled Backpacker Hostel) and sits on the banks of the Siem Reap River. The walk is really nice but you can get a Tuk Tuk if you're a little further out which shouldn't cost more then $2-3.
,Price - Yippeee, our first real taste of cheap gym life! The 'being western' cost for a session at this gym is $1 (70p). The locals get in for 2000riel (35p), but to be frank neither of us were complaining about the cost.
Equipment - We loved this gym because simply put, it is a proper oldskool sweat box. There is no aircon, the fans are never turned on (Katie actually turned these on, about two minutes later someone turned them off and someone else then had to go and fix one of the fans where bits fell off), some of the olympic bars are bent, the plates are steel and covered in rust! We might not be selling it to you, but this is the exact type of gym we love. However, so as not to discredit it, everything works great and everything is clean. In fact the clean the floor quite often! A little busier, but still you're not having to wait around for anything. There is also a huge range of free weight benches, squat racks, resistance machines, bars of all shapes and sizes and lots of things to hang from. Dumbbells range from 1 to 60+ kg. There is a large area with mats that we smashed out a few circuits on. There are a few cardio machines but you have to actually pay more if you want to use these due to the additional use of electricity, which brought a smile to our faces. They do however have, running machines, bikes, cross trainers and even those pointless vibro things that make you shake.
Extras - No cooked chicken here unfortunately but we found a cafe on the way back selling amazing Chicken and Tuna salads for around $3 for a decent portion so you're not short in the area. (We don't remember the name but the menu had a big green frog on the front - happy hunting.)
They sell protein powder sachets for $1 which in hindsight are actually very well priced, so stock up! They also sell, what looks like, a ready made protein shake in the fridge for $0.50, however, be aware this is not protein! It is in fact an incredible tasting blended sweetcorn drink! So 100% fructose and 0% protein. They taste amazing though and combined with the protein sachet make a perfect post workout (although don't mix them!).
Quick Synopsis - Spot on! Staff are nice, but don't really speak English which is no issue unless you want to have a conversation for some reason. There's an area in the front to park your motorbike if you need. Easy to reach and overall just a really good gym environment. This has probably been our favourite gym so far and we went near on every morning when we were in Siem Reap. Its also the only gym we could find in the area that wasn't a martial arts based gym.
